Steel Chimney Surveys
The publishing of the HSE Document GS 53 placed a greater emphasis on the need for regular inspection and maintenance programs to self supporting single flue industrial steel chimneys highlighting their susceptibility to corrosion and structural failure.
The importance of a chimney is seldom fully appreciated until it suddenly becomes non operational, a planned survey and maintenance schedule helps reduce now well documented problems and greatly increases the likelihood of extending a chimneys design life beyond its original 20 year design period.
Churchill undertake all steel chimney inspections in strict accordance with the HSE Guidance Note GS53 and the A.T.L.A.S Inspection guide for Single Flue Industrial Steel Chimneys and Multi Flue steel chimneys to BS4076 Appendix A.
Steel Chimney Surveys Include;-
- Non Destructive Ultra Sonic Testing
- Dye Penetrant Testing
- Removal of insulation & cladding to perform an 8 yearly inspection
- Chimney design check for conformity to BS4076
- Anti Mass Vibration Dampers
- Guy Wires Tension and Conformity to BS302 & DIN 1142
- Holding Down Arrangement
- Destructive & Non Destructive Testing of Flange Bolts
- Examination and testing of the installed lightning protection system
- Internal remote colour CCTV surveys to confirm the condition of linings
- Security and condition of fixed access and platforms
- Testing & Inspection of installed fall arrest systems
- Aircraft warning lights
Concrete & Brick Chimney Surveys
Commonly employed in heavy industry to dispel waste gases to the atmosphere emanating from aggressive processes, reinforced concrete and brick chimneys are susceptible to attack from a combination of the exhaust waste gases, weather and often a coastal environment.
Whilst it is very rare that new concrete or brick chimneys are built in the UK the structures remaining in operation have done so for a number and therefore they demand a high level of service to ensure they remain in a satisfactory condition.
The importance of a thorough condition survey should never be overlooked, the investment in a quality survey has the potential to result in the saving of significant sums of money by identifying the most economic and effective method of repairing a concrete or brick windshield.
Concrete & Brick Chimney Surveys Include;-
- Non destructive and destructive testing of the chimney windshield
- CAD defect location drawings plotting location and size of repair sites
- Internal rope access Inspections to steel, brick and refractory linings
- Internal remote colour CCTV surveys to confirm the condition of linings
- Security and condition of fixed access and platforms
- Inspection of fixtures and fittings including step irons, steel tensioning bands, aircraft warning lights and sampling platforms
- Examination and testing of the installed lightning protection system
- Testing & Inspection of installed fall arrest systems
- Cavity boroscope inspection
- Thermal imaging surveys
- Construction design checks
