Case Study 2: Ford Motor Co Dagenham 78m Steel Chimney

Churchill’s were employed by Ford Motor Co to investigate further the discovery of sheared flange bolts at the base of the 78m tall x 4.62m diameter steel multi flue chimney serving Fords main on site power plant.

Upon completion of the initial inspection of the structure Churchill’s employed the services of Beaumont Specialist Fabrications Ltd and John Turner (Engineering Consultants) Ltd and working in accordance with the CICND Model Code and BS4076 were tasked with the design and engineering of a repair and solution to the problem.

The 1st phase recommended the total replacement of all flange bolts serving the structure with the addition of 60mm thick steel washer plates being added to the two lower bolted flange arrangements.

The 2nd phase saw the over plating of the windshield at the 31m level in the form of a 10mm thick steel bandage 3100mm deep welded in place around the full 14.51m circumference of the windshield.

The 3rd phase saw the design and installation of an anti mass vibration damper to be installed immediately beneath the summit of the windshield.
