CASE STUDY: 35M EDWARDIAN BRICK CHIMNEY
WATES CONSTRUCTION LIMITED <<Back to case studies SPECIALISTS IN HIGH RISE DEMOLITION & STRUCTURAL MAINTENANCE In November 2004 Churchill’s were employed by Wates Construction Limited to undertake a full internal and external survey of the 35 metre Edwardian brick chimney at the Moseley Baths site Balsall Heath, Birmingham. As part of this survey Churchill’s were required to provide and install a motorised man riding winch system complete with rescue and recovery equipment to facilitate an independent inspection of the internal walls of the chimney by a Wates appointed structural engineer. Upon submission of Churchill’s report a detailed scope of works was compiled by Wates Construction Ltd. The scope of works would see the supply and installation of a suitable internal steel liner system together with the complete removal and reinstatement of the uppermost 10metres of the brickwork. The chimney being a Grade 1 listed building, would require the uppermost 10metres building back exactly to it’s profile prior to the removal of the 10 metres. To accomplish this Churchill’s painstakingly numbered and mapped every single brick (8112no) during the dismantling of the top 10 metres of the structure ensuring every brick would return to it’s original location. As part of the contract Churchill’s provided, installed and maintained access throughout the height of the structure throughout the duration of the contract. |
