Kings College Hospital 50m Chimney Dismantling Project
09 January 2010
Despite the difficult weather conditions experienced this week the dismantling of the disused 50m steel chimney at The King College Hospital in London continues at a pace.
The project has presented a unique set of problems with the chimney having to be dismantled piecemeal small and without the use of mobile cranes.
As part of the dismantling process the first items that required removing were the 6no 51 metre 600mm diameter flues, without the use of a mobile crane this required the construction of a lifting rig located at the chimney summit and the installation of winch supplying a SWL of 5 ton. Once suspended each flue was released from its base mounting and lowered down onto the internal base of the chimney floor. The base of the flue was then cut away and removed from within the chimney base, the flue was then lowered repeating the process until each flue was removed.
This method will be repeated to each flue until all 6no flues have been removed leaving the outer main structure ready for dismantling using Churchills specialist demolition rig.
